ROMANIAN DISABILITY GALA – 2012

CEDCD – the winner of the Romanian Disability Gala – Promoting Ability Section

Bucharest, 28 November 2012. For the first time in the history of Romanian Disability Gala, a nongovernmental organization is awarded the prize “Promoting Ability”. Tuesday, 27 November 2012, European Centre for the Rights of Children with Disabilities (CEDCD) was awarded during an official ceremony organized by Motivation Foundation, Active Watch and Romanian Public Television, the prestigious prize of the Romanian Disability Gala. CEDCD was awarded for the national Campaign “The Music of Fulfilled Wishes”, which has been implemented in March 2012 and was meant to promote in the Romanian public space the rights and the potential of Down Syndrome children through a positive message of diversity and tolerance transmitted by the young  musician Sujeet DESAI from the United States of America.

Sujeet DESAI graduated the Music Academy in USA, plays 7 instruments, is a Tae Kwon Do international Champion, drives his own car, lives independently and he was born with Down Syndrome. He is the International Ambassador of Down Syndrome persons and, in March 2012, was the vector of image for the CEDCD Campaign – “The Music of Fulfilled Wishes”.

The Romanian Disability Gala Award represents for us, the CEDCD team, a great honor, as well as a great responsibility. It is an honor because it reflects a prestigious recognition of a constant and intense effort by our team and recognition of the role and importance of our mandate in the area of promoting and protecting the rights of children with disabilities in Romania. It is as well, a responsibility because the standards raised by this award represent a challenge for our future actions. Our struggle for the rights of children with disabilities will go on and we express our hope that our new Project – One Voice for Disability – through which we intend to coagulate the civil society with mandate in the field of disability and the parents of children with disabilities with the aim to promote a new law for the rights of children with disabilities, will meet the expectations raised by this award”, declared Madalina TURZA, CEDCD president.

We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to the partners who supported us in this campaign and promoted our message of diversity and tolerance: Romanian National Council for Combating Discrimination, Sensiblu, Rantrop and Straton Co., Levor Hotel, Radio Romania, Romanian Public Television, Romanian Association for Public Relation as well as the numerous and prestigious Romanian artists who joined our cause: Paula SELING, Valentin TEODOSIU, Tiberiu OPREA and Ionel TUDOR, Radio Romania Orchestra, Big Band Radio, Cristina ANGHELESCU  and all those who understood and promoted the idea that disability is nothing else but an expression of diversity.
