Woman - Mother of a child with disabilities - Employee

Bucharest, 28th of May 2012 - The European Centre for the Rights of Children with Disabilitieswas present at the events dedicated to The Week "Woman Do Matter!” organized by the COLFASA Association, during the period 23rd and 25th of May, and at the session of conferences, seminars and workshops, which have brought into question the phenomenon of discrimination and psychological harassment of women at work.

In this context, the President of CEDCD, Mrs. Madalina Turza, presented to the participants the characteristics of the discrimination phenomenon and psychological harassment at the workplace of the woman, the mother of a child with disabilities.

The issue of discrimination of this vulnerable group was brought into the public agenda for the first time in Romania by the representative of CEDCD, by identifying features of the profile of the woman, the mother of a child with disabilities, features which are able to affect social relations, partnerships, family and professional relations of the woman.

The main concept brought into question by the representative of CEDCD was that of "women exceptional caregiving strain" in relation to the special needs of children with disabilities. This concept defines the broad scope of responsibilities and psychological and social pressure factors which affect and overburden the mother of a disabled child.

CEDCD representative also presented the legal framework regarding the women's rights as an employee and as mother of a child with disabilities, the necessity of implementing affirmative measures to meet the needs of this vulnerable group, as well as a number of elements of the relevant case law on this problematic from the European Court of Justice.
